Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

Knox laughs a bit. "They are cute at that age. Just wait till he's 14, though."

"Yeah, dropping ducks will be the least of my problems."

"But that's years off. I say, enjoy it now and don't rush the gray hairs."

Guppy laughs.

"Well, I don't have any of those yet, thank goodness."

He grabs a slice of cake. It has a fishy eye on.

"This isn't made from fish, right?" He doesn't entirely trust British cooking.

"Of course not, it's a strawberry sponge."

"Just checking. I don't know much about English cooking." Or tact. "So how's it been going?"

"I assume you heard about the flu thing, right?"

"At the Bar. Yeah, I saw the signs. Should I be worried? I never get the flu, but I don't want to start now." He also never gets flu shots, on the theory that he's never needed one.

"I wouldn't worry, we don't have any flu shots."

"Isn't that a reason to worry? Or is it just like the flu usually is, and leaves you laid up for a week." Knox doesn't know much about the 1918 pandemic. And remembers the utter bullcrap that accompanied the 1976 swine flue not-outbreak. So he's skeptical. And confused. And ill-informed.

"Apart from the hallucinations, it doesn't seem to be much worse than normal flu. Try not to catch it but don't lose sleep over the idea."

"A few hallucinations could be interesting. I never did get to have any in the 60s." Because he was too young to try the drugs his brother dabbled in (briefly).

"They're not generally that fun." Guppy says.

"You had some?" Knox puts his emptied plate on the table.

"Yeah, kept thinking I was a PE teacher." Guppy says. "I seem to have gained some muscle mass."

"From the flu...only at Milliways." He hopes. It's one thing have weird flu there and another in Gotham. The last thing Gotham needs is a new and bizarre disease. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Contagion)

"Yeah, try not to take it home."

"Hey, if I get sick, you think I'm going to go and use my sick days? I'll gladly stay in the Bar, get better, and let Raps play nurse." Which brings a big and mildly suggestive smile to Alex's face.

"Well I'm working on finding a cure, but it's going to take time." Guppy says. "At the moment we're just treating the symptoms, that's all we can do."

"Tried chicken soup?"

"It's not a bad start." Small smile. "It's pretty contagious though, try not to infect Raps if you get it."

He looks around. "Did you bring her? It was sort of a mob when I brought you all in."

"She's around her somewhere," Alex says ~~as the mun handwaves~~. "I don't know if she can actually get the flu, or anything else. That whole Fable magic constitution thing.

"Of course, if it's Bar flu, it's probably magic, too."

"Heh, in that case if it goes epidemic, I'll add her to my people to watch out for and try to recruit list."

"So you're acting like the CDC. Not a bad idea.

"Too bad we don't have a newspaper in the Bar anymore. We could keep people informed." Or start a panic. Which is almost the same thing.
