Jun. 11th, 2009 11:47 pmAt last, some of the world is beginning to make sense. The endless noise that the giants make, the sounds that he echos, finally starting to turn into words that mean something.
Uncle Will was right. Of course he knows what 'Dada' means. And 'Mama' too. The providers of food, comfort and snuggles have been telling him what they're called every day repeatedly for seven months. If he can just work out which is which, he'll be racing away.
The favourite toy is in his grasp now, because he can get to it without assistance. The nursery giants seem to dislike this, and keep trying to give him something else to play with.
The other toys are obsolete. This one is the one for him.
Alexander concentrates. He's been working on recreating his favourite tune for the last few weeks. Baa baa fluffy sheep. A masterpiece.
Currently he's got the first two notes sorted. Blue blue. He's well on the way to working out note three, if people will stop interrupting his creative process.
His nemesis is back. The large child that smells funny and likes to throw cheese flakes around. Nemesis picks up the toy piano and walks off with it, trampling over his legs as he goes. Alexander responds with an angry squeal, but the crime hasn't been noticed. The giants are distracted with a fight between the two children that wear pink every day.
He seeks his own comfort instead, and remembering what Mummy does to soothe him, gently rocks his own body back and forth until he feels better. The instant comfort satisfaction from a motion he is able to create himself is imprinted on his mind.
"Whatcha doing Alex? Do you want to play Row Row?" Oh, now a giant is on the scene, just as he got comfortable. She's taking his hands and singing 'Row, Row, Row your Boat' with him.
It wasn't what he meant, but it'll do. And he treats her to one of his cutest smiles.
