Jun. 17th, 2009 09:34 pm"So, how is Alexander doing? Growing like a weed I see." the GP says, picking up the baby off Guppy's knee to check him over. Being very premature at birth, regular check-ups by a doctor other than his father have been important.
"Yes, he's crawling already." Guppy says. "And he's saying Mama and Dada, though not at the right parent yet."
The GP glances down to check Alexander's date of birth.
"That's pretty advanced, given his age." he comments. "Any concerns?"
"Well... he's started banging his head on things." Frogspawn says. "At first we thought it was accidental, but we've caught him doing it repeatedly a few times."
"How long for?"
"Well, usually someone intervenes fairly quickly, but he was doing it in his cot the other day."
The doctor looks at Alexander's scalp, and nods.
"He's only got the one bruise." he says. "Head banging is not uncommon in children of Alexander's age, he'll most likely grow out of it before the age of three. It's thought to be a comfort behaviour like thumb sucking, and it's not usually a cause for concern unless associated with other unusual behaviours or developmental delay. He doesn't seem delayed, if anything he seems to be a bright child. Keep an eye on him, cover up any very hard walls, and keep him entertained. It might be that he's getting bored."
Guppy, reassured, thanks the doctor, who puts Alexander back on the floor to watch him crawling. He makes some notes, observes Alexander saying 'Mama' and 'Dada', and then nods.
"If he starts head banging enough to leave lots of bruises, or he knocks himself out, or he just seems to be doing it for long periods of time, or you have any other causes for concern just bring him back in. Other than that, I don't think you need worry."
They make the next check-up appointment, then head for home.
"Hear that Fry?" Frogspawn says, tucking him into his carseat. "Ooza clever baby then?"
