Jun. 1st, 2009 08:05 pmOn the living room carpet, Frogspawn lifts Alexander gently under his tummy, helping him to learn how to use his crawling muscles for when he's strong enough to do it. The baby has been increasingly frustrated over the last few days, and managed to launch himself into the coffee table on one of his attempts to get mobile.
Guppy, bag packed, watches the two of them.
"How long do you think you'll be away." Frogspawn asks him.
"Not long." Guppy says. "Should be less than a day in time here."
"How dangerous is this trip going to be?"
"I don't know. Atton's world is dangerous. But Holby is dangerous." Guppy says. "And I trust Atton with my life. He wouldn't be taking me if he thought there was a significant chance I couldn't get back."
They are quiet for a moment. Frogspawn has had to consider ever since meeting Guppy the possibility that something may happen to him in another dimension. They even discussed an Action Plan for the event, a series of envelopes of letters in Guppy's writing for whatever the occasion might be, though they hope it will never be needed. And although worried, she has no intention of stopping him from going.
"I trust your judgement." she says quietly. "And Atton's."
Then, she smirks. "Just promise me to think with your brain and not with any part of your body secreting testosterone."
"Promise." Guppy sits down next to her on the carpet, leaning over to give her a cuddle and a kiss on the cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too. Here, I got this for you. I didn't want to put our pictures in it in case you got kidnapped or something, but... well, open it."
Guppy opens the locket. In one side is a tiny strand of green hair from one of the streaks Frogspawn has in the back of her ponytail, wrapped around a strand of one of his dark brown curls that she snagged when he was sleeping. In the other side is one of Alex's little curls of hair.
"Thank you." he says, putting it on. "It'll help me keep focus, like the two of you do."
He picks up his son.
"Alexander, Daddy has to go on a quest, but I'll most likely be so quick you won't even notice. But just in case it takes longer, remember that I'll always love and be proud of you, wherever I am in the universe." He feels a lump in his throat, and swallows it down.
He kisses them both goodbye again, then goes into the hallway and disappears through the portal into the bar. Frogspawn stares after him, trying to not worry.
"Dada!" says the little person on the carpet, reaching towards the doorway where Guppy had been, and bursting into tears.
