It's not easy being six months old. Even less so when you're stuck in a body that's still only four months and you're ready to get up and crawling already.

Alexander Jefry Sandhu surveys his environment critically. Every kid in this place is able to move around except him. It's no wonder he's had to resort to guarding toys like the dog does, just to stop someone bigger from yoinking them away from him.

One of the nursery staff moves over and picks him up, away from the favoured keyboard toy he's been guarding for the last half an hour.

"Come on Alex, let's let some of the other children play with that."

Alexander expresses his displeasure with a whiny cry, feeling the indignity of being hoisted up in the air just when he was nicely comfortable where he was. The giant blonde child immediately latches onto the precious mini keyboard, and Alexander is deposited supported against some cushions with a large ball with buttons on in front of him.

He presses the button. It makes a mooing sound.

He discovers that if he bashes the toy against the floor it can baa and moo at the same time.

This toy is not as interesting as the one he'd been playing with. He'd just got the hang of it; you had to mash one of the coloured buttons at a time to make noises like the song time noise maker did.

He looks up. The nursery assistant has answered the phone. No rude hoisting in the air for a moment or two.

Now, how do legs work? People around him seem to be able to do it all the time, lucky things. He wiggles them experimentally, and concludes that this alone provides no actual momentum.

The cushion is in the way, but he manages to fall over sideways and roll onto his tummy. Okay. Now what? His little arms and legs flail as though swimming, but he remains firmly where he is... wait, just a second, this feels right, definitely lifting his head up off the ground with both hands.

His efforts are interrupted by a bigger kid falling over him, and starting to wail. Alexander looks at the chaos he has caused dispassionnately, then tries again. Push arms push feet try and lift tummy... success!

He stops for a rest. One centimetre done, only another four hundred to go. This learning to get around business is hard work.

By combination of rolls and random wiggles, he manages to progress close enough that he's sure he can make it, when a shadow descends over him.

"Oops, someone's done a stinker!" says a voice, and Alexander finds himself flying up in the air again.

It's not easy being six months old.
