Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

If the baby will not come to the party, a small and manageable portion of the party must come to him! Enzo drops in after a while, to visit Alex and any other small persons who may have joined him.

"Hi Enzo!" Frogspawn waves as he comes in. "Do you want some food?"

Alex doesn't acknowledge him at the moment because he's engrossed in Pingu. It's not that he doesn't care, really...

"Hi, Frogspawn! I already had cake downstairs..."

Which does not mean he will not have a look at what the food up here is.

"How's it going?"

It's general kids' party food; weeny little sandwiches, finger food, crisps and stuff.

"It's going well, and how are you?"

She peers over at Alex.

"Fry, come and say hello to Enzo."

"Enzo." Fry says, without taking his eyes off the TV.

"I'm good! Vacation's almost over."

He smirks at Fry. "I guess that counts? Hi, Fry."

"You go to Sprite School?" Frogspawn asks, offering him a Party Ring biscuit (the kind that are on the LS icon).

The theme tune from Pingu signals the end of the episode, and Fry looks around at Enzo.

So that's what they're called.

"I go to the Guardian Academy," Enzo declares a trifle smugly. "There you are, Fry!"

"Oh wow, that sounds cool!" Frogspawn says, sitting cross-legged on the floor. "How long does it take to train to be a guardian?"

Fry crawls over and tries to take Enzo's biscuit.

"Fry, you can have this one." Frogspawn says quickly, dangling a purple on in his direction. "That one is Enzo's."

"Six years, if I pass all my exams first time. It's a big function. I'm starting my third year." He takes a hasty bite of his biscuit.

"So you get like weapons training and stuff?"

She breaks Alex's biscuit into smaller bits.

"Alex, you have to chew these."

"Weapons, unarmed combat, tactics, system repair, Game studies, all kinds of things. I'm gonna try to get some medic training as an elective."

Yes, your husband is to thank for that.

"Oh, yeah, I think Guppy told me that. That and something about kittens?"

And there is a curious (if lazy) fuzzy round baby there, who looks up at Enzo when he arrives.

Someone who might be persuaded to give him snacks!

"Hey, Evan!" Enzo drops into a crouch. "D'you recognize me?"

...well, he doesn't smell familiar.

Most people look alike, when you're that small, and mostly see them in terms of their sticking hands or faces into your face. But the squirrel side of him is pretty good at scents, and no... not quite placing him.

...but the possibility of snacks! Evan is hopeful.

It can't help that he doesn't ordinarily have a scent to recognize, either. Sorry, li'l buddy, it's gonna have to be voice.

"It's me, Enzo," says Enzo, not really expecting this to make any impression, and offers Evan a finger. (It is not meant as a snack.)

Not meant as a snack, but that doesn't mean Ev won't try to bring it to his mouth anyway.

Hey, maybe mutant squirrelbabies are kinda like snakes, experiencing the world around them by taste.

His claws are trimmed though, and he's only as strong as the average baby, so it's no trouble to avoid being baby-slobbered on.

Oh, you know his human side would do it anyway. The mouth is one of the most tactilely sensitive parts of the body; taste is almost irrelevant.

"Whoa, hey, not for that!" declares Enzo with a laugh. He tugs his finger away, and looks around at the table. Those banana slices on the fruit plate look soft enough...

"Here, slobber on these instead."

See, it worked!

Of course it worked! The universe is all a plot to get Ev snacks.

Why, if Enzo were in on the telepathic squirrel-link, Ev would tell him so himself.

He giggles as he takes the banana slice he is offered. It all makes it into his mouth, though it doesn't all stay there.

Enzo laughs. "I wonder how old you have to be to learn not to make a mess with your food?"

Judging by his father? At least mid-thirties, if not older.

But bananas are so good! He attempts to push the escaped part back into his mouth, which just makes more of a mess.

Enzo laughs harder and grabs a napkin from the table. "C'mon..." he says, squatting down to wipe Evan's face.

He can always lick the banana off the napkin if he must.

He's managed to get smeared banana in the fur outside his ears, too. It's like magic, only... not very impressive.

But he likes the attention of having the banana wiped off. Any attention to him is good attention.

Before he fully realizes he's doing it, Enzo spits on the napkin to wipe at the worst of it.
