Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

Mental facepalm.

"Er, thanks Enzo. I think."

Enzo grins shamelessly. "You're welcome!"

You could not have expected to get through this without some sort of gag gift, Guppy.

"Just in case the fact I'm getting a bald spot wasn't embarrassing enough."

"You're turning 110," Enzo declares, pronouncing each digit. "If you're not embarrassed, we're not doing it right."

"Isn't it 120 by your standards?"

"There's no 2 in binary."

"I meant the four years is one minute thing."

Patiently, Enzo re-explains, "Five hours is one birthday. 110 is six. An hour's a year, and a minute is a month."

"Ah, so actually I'm six. Sorry Enzo."

"It's cool, I know the time thing's weird."

"I'm sorry there's not more people your age at the party." Guppy says apologetically. "Momiji was on the guest list so he might be here in a bit. I was going to ask Dot and Bob and Mairi, but I thought the process of becoming human might be a bit traumatic for the baby."

"Yeah, it's hard enough when you know what's coming. And that's for regular sprites."

"It didn't hurt you did it?"

"Not hurt. But it's a big shock the first time. Not just the body stuff, though you have to get used to that, too. It's losing your format that's hard to handle. You have to keep reminding yourself what you are, the whole time. I'm used to it now, but..."

Guppy nods.

"That makes sense. Wouldn't want to inflict that on Mairi."

"That and I don't think she'd keep her powers. That'd be scary, too."

"You can't fly in your normal form, right? I've not seen you do it, but I've seen Bob."

"'Course not. Bob can do it 'cause he merged with his keytool, and Mairi can do it 'cause she inherited. The rest of us need zipboards."

Guppy nods.

"Figured you'd have done it by now if you could."

"You know it."

"Do you play football?" As in soccer.

"Sure, which one?"

"The one where you kick the ball with your foot into a goal."

"With the ball that's really a ball? Sure!"

"Great, if you like you can help me teach Alex when the bar flu clears. Not quite as exciting as flying, but it'll be fun."
