Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

"Did I?" Guppy laughs. "Sorry, force of habit. I assume you asked for the check up and I didn't impose it on you."

He nods. "I don't tend to drink unless I'm stressed out. Which isn't actually a great time to drink. But I don't think it does any harm in moderation. I'm not going to drink tonight though, because we have an agreement that Alex should never see his parents intoxicated."

Knox isn't surprised Guppy doesn't remember. How many patients does Guppy have, compared to the handful of doctors Knox has seen in his life.

"I guess that's a good idea. Just be careful with him in the Bar. He's going to see a lot of people drunk there. But it's good that he learns about that at some point." Knox's parents pretty much never drink, but not for any reason other than not being drinkers.

"Yeah, but they won't necessarily be people he needs to rely on."

"Should I try to be careful if see you around with my namesake?" When did Knox learn to be responsible? Probably while looking after Allie.

"Don't worry about it." Guppy says. "If you want to see him, he's upstairs playing with Frogspawn. We thought the party would be a bit overwhealming for him."

"I'll go up and check later. And I am sure you are right. I never liked parties as a kid. Even when they were for me."

"Yeah, we took him to Funky Farm for his birthday, he doesn't do crowded rooms well."

"What's Funky Farm?" Does Alex really want to know?

"I think the American Equivalent is a petting zoo."

"Ahhhh. Yeah, we have those. There's one north of Gotham. And that was a bit much for the little guy?"

"No, it was much easier on him than a crowded room. He likes to hold the ducklings."

"Good. I mean that he likes it.

"Not that I have anything again ducks," he notes. "Bet you took some really cute pictures."

"Yeah, we got a video. He makes this cute little 'Eee' noise and flaps his arms when he's excited. You kind of have to watch that the duckling doesn't fall off."

Knox laughs a bit. "They are cute at that age. Just wait till he's 14, though."

"Yeah, dropping ducks will be the least of my problems."

"But that's years off. I say, enjoy it now and don't rush the gray hairs."

Guppy laughs.

"Well, I don't have any of those yet, thank goodness."

He grabs a slice of cake. It has a fishy eye on.

"This isn't made from fish, right?" He doesn't entirely trust British cooking.

"Of course not, it's a strawberry sponge."

"Just checking. I don't know much about English cooking." Or tact. "So how's it been going?"

"I assume you heard about the flu thing, right?"

"At the Bar. Yeah, I saw the signs. Should I be worried? I never get the flu, but I don't want to start now." He also never gets flu shots, on the theory that he's never needed one.

"I wouldn't worry, we don't have any flu shots."

"Isn't that a reason to worry? Or is it just like the flu usually is, and leaves you laid up for a week." Knox doesn't know much about the 1918 pandemic. And remembers the utter bullcrap that accompanied the 1976 swine flue not-outbreak. So he's skeptical. And confused. And ill-informed.

"Apart from the hallucinations, it doesn't seem to be much worse than normal flu. Try not to catch it but don't lose sleep over the idea."
