"Guppy?"
Guppy looks up from his paperwork and smiles at his slightly nervous colleague.
"What's up Pam?"
"Um, you know the patients that were with Mr E? They both have the same rash as he had."
Guppy frowns slightly and gets up, following her.
"We confirmed Mr E with encephalitis due to West Nile Virus yesterday. The others shouldn't have been able to catch it from him, we don't have that kind of mosquito here."
He enters the room where the other two aphasiacs are, reassuring them as he checks over the rash. Pam's observation is correct, it does appear to be the same.
His instinct is to question the initial diagnosis, but he knows the lab confirmed it. So instead he asks Pam to keep an eye on the two newly infected patients, then goes back to the room they were in. Mr E is in intensive care, so for the moment, the room is empty. It was thought best to leave it that way until it was clear what had caused the encephalitis.
Guppy shuts the door, and listens.
'Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-eeeeeeeee-eeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEeeeeee------eeeeEEEEEeeeeEEEee.'
His eyes follow the sound. It would appear Mr E had a stowaway. In which case it is something of a miracle that it didn't get out of the room.
Finally he spots it, a great big bugger. Like nothing he's ever seen native around here. He picks up a clipboard and moves over to splat it...
'eeEEEEEeee' It shoots past his head and disappears. Guppy looks around. Now where has the bloody thing gone?
He feels something move in his hair, and hits himself over the head with the clipboard just as the ward sister enters.
"What on Earth are you doing?" she asks as Guppy removes the squashed mosquito from his hair.
"Mr E brought a stowaway, a mosquito. Probably in his clothes. It's bitten the other two patients that were in here." Guppy holds the bug up by its wing, then looks for something to put it in. "I think it bit me too." he adds. "But nobody had more than one bite, so I'm hoping it's run out of ammunition."
Cassie winces. "This won't look good for the ward. Being the first hospital in the UK to have non-imported West Nile Virus."
Guppy shakes his head. "Nobody could have known the insect was still here. The important thing is that it didn't escape. We should still check for others though. I'll send it to the tropics people." Little smile. "Holby is known for the unusual, don't worry."
"Unusual? Not on my ward thank you."
