It's been a long day. After Guppy's shift, he had to trail around three of his aunts' houses before he could find one that would open the door. It took even longer to persuade her to give his mum another chance.
The advantage of being part (sort of) of a very large extended family, was that there were numerous individual minds to make decisions on who was in and out, even if they did tend to be polarised towards the same outcome. Fortunately, when one mind softened, the others tended to follow suit, and after a long evening of persuasion Guppy had one aunt, two uncles and a cousin and a half (one was undecided but probably going to go his way) prepared to give his mum a helping hand. And that was probably more help than she should expect from someone she let fall down the stairs without checking he was all right.
The last cousin was something of a disaster, and decided to go for telling Guppy exactly what he thought of him. In the end he just fled that one, running three streets and through a field as a short cut to his home. By this time it is early evening, and he doesn't see a crouched figure in the long plants until he falls over her.
"AARGH!"
"AARGH!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you there. Are you okay?"
"You ruined my crop circle, stupid... oh, hey Guppy."
Guppy blinks and pants as Frogspawn scrambles to her feet and gives him a hand up. She looks at him quizzically.
"Y'aint being mugged are you? You were in one hell of a hurry."
"I... needed to run." Guppy feels his face reddening. "I just... panicked." He looks at the floor. "I do that a lot."
He smiles awkwardly and looks back at her. "Why are you out here?"
"I study crop circles in my spare time. This one is probably a combine harvester, but I was checking out the pattern." She slips a hand into his. "My sister used to have panic attacks, I believe the cure is tea. Come on, I live close."
Guppy thanks her as she picks up her notebook and they set off across the field.
