Abs eyes his housemate as he pours spaghetti onto the plate.
"My mother took notice of me. She stuck up for me." Guppy tries to explain. "And besides, he hardly hit me, it just glanced off my eyebrow."
Abs sighs.
"This sounds remarkably similar to when you let her trap your hand in the door. I know you want her back Guppy, but letting other people hurt you is no different from self-harming, and sooner or later you're going to be hurt properly. And people are going to ask questions, and I won't cover up for you. Promise me you're not going to do this again."
"I never said I was."
"Guppy..."
"All right, I promise. But you have to agree it's a start."
"Yeah, it's a start, but it's a bloody awful way to make the first step."
Abs dumps bolognaise sauce on the spaghetti and passes it to Guppy.
"Anyway, now that we've regained some sanity, I need a favour. I chatted with some of the others and we decided to have a staff panto on a medic-based theme. 'Grease is the ward'."
Guppy glances up, mouth full of spaghetti, and swallows.
"You want me to be in a pantomime."
"Yes. We need someone to play Danny."
"You want me to play the lead in a pantomime? Why can't Greg do it, he's far more suitable?"
"Greg can't sing. And besides, you don't want his role, he gets the sex scene."
"You want me to play the lead in a pantomime that involves singing? Oh no I'm not!"
"Oh yes you are! See, you're in the spirit of things already. Here's your script, first rehearsal after work tomorrow. Performance in two weeks time."
"But... wait, who's playing Sandy?"
