Feb. 21st, 2011 12:09 amGuppy watches, fascinated, as the small person in front of him balances herself on her hands and feet. Coral currently looks like she's attempting to mimic Mowgli from the Jungle Book, or a baby deer.
"Use your knees?" he suggests, as she balances there, unsure which limb to move first. "You're gonna fall on your face doing that."
Coral stays like that for several minutes, then suddenly sets off, wobbling slowly across the room until she gets to where Fry is playing. Then she sits down with a bump on her bottom. Guppy claps approvingly. Bizarre, but cute and impressive. Coral waves at Fry, who appears to ignore her until:
"Coral wants a drink." Fry says, not looking up.
Guppy blinks. Then, experimentally, passes Coral her sippy cup. She drinks thirstily. Huh.
"How did you know that?" he asks Fry.
"She said." Fry says.
"She can't talk yet." Guppy says, eying him.
He peers at his little daughter. Coral hasn't said anything other than Mama and Dada yet,and most of the time to the wrong parent. But Fry's language development was way ahead of schedule, so now he's wondering if he missed something. Coral doesn't say anything though, just wraps her arms around her body and gurgles.
"Coral wants her teddy." Fry says.
Guppy looks between the two of them, baffled, then gets the bear. Coral reaches out for it and snuggles it.
"Okay, very clever." he says. "How is she saying it."
"With signs." Fry says.
"What signs?"
"Drink and teddy."
"Where did you learn those?"
"Nursery." Fry carefully lines up his bricks.
"Huh. I'll have to learn that then." Guppy says, picking Coral up and holding her so she's 'standing'. "Who's my clever little girl?"
"Me." Fry says.
"Nah, you're my clever little boy. Coral's my clever little girl." Guppy says, kissing Coral on the forehead.
"Dadada!" Coral babbles, wiping her dribbly hands down Guppy's face.
He doesn't care. After all the trouble lately - Dr Sharpe's commuppence, flu, accidentally hitting on Gene - it's good to just spend some time with the kids.
