May. 12th, 2010 11:55 pmGuppy steps out of the multi-disciplinary meeting, and finds Dr Sharpe back. Great, his favourite person.
"Yes, Dr Sandhu, despite your best efforts I am not yet fired." the man says. "I'd like to keep it that way, so please stay out of my way."
"You got yourself into trouble by threatening to sack his pregnant wife for being pregnant, and being highly unsubtle about it." Dr Wood chips in. "If he hadn't made a complaint, I would have. Your attempts to slash our department's budget were a nuisance even before you started using illegal tactics. Frances is a super physiotherapist, and she's a valuable contribution to our team." Beat. "When she's here."
Dr Wood turns his back on the irritated administrator, leading Guppy away from the situation. "How is Frances? Must be hard taking bed rest with Alex around."
"She's frustrated but okay." Guppy says. "Actually Alex is on a practice run sleepover at his auntie Hannah's. We thought we'd better have a trial run before the baby comes."
"Good plan, wish I'd done that with my oldest." Dr Wood comments. "How many weeks is she now?"
"Twenty three on thursday."
"Well all the best from me." Dr Wood says. "If you need time off, let me know and I'll make sure you're covered." He checks his watch. "You get off home, you're well past the end of your shift."
Guppy thanks him and heads for home. He arrives just as his sister in law is dropping Alex back off. She looks drained. Alex looks stormy as well.
"Hey." he says tentatively. "How did it go?"
"You weren't kidding when you said he doesn't sleep." Hannah says, tiredly. "How the heck do you do this every day?"
"Sorry, I guess being somewhere unfamiliar probably didn't help."
"Too right. I'm sorry, I couldn't get him undressed, he's in the same clothes as he was yesterday. I managed to do his nappy but that was about it. He just screamed and bit me every time I tried, so he didn't get his bath, and he had to sleep in them and... I'm sorry, I just... sucked."
"No, you didn't, thank you." Guppy says. "I'm sorry, he is hard work especially when he's in an unfamiliar schedule. I thought he'd be okay because you've had him in the daytime. Would you still be prepared to have him when we have the baby, or do you want us to find someone else?"
He is interrupted by Alex, who after taking his shoes off, suddenly shouts.
"Shuttup Alex is three in de fucking morning."
Guppy stares at Alex, grimaces slightly, and looks back at his sister in law, who has gone very red.
"Oh God, he's like a parrot!" She wails. "I'm sorry Guppy. He kept me and Abby up the whole night."
"It's okay, you have to look after Abby first." Guppy says. "I'll see if we can make other arrangements. Thank you for looking after him, I'm really sorry he's been so much trouble."
"Hannah, have you taught him the f word?!" Frogspawn calls through from the living room. Hannah looks sheepish.
"Er... gotta go, bye Guppy." She thrusts Alex's night bag at him, he gives her the box of chocolates for her efforts, and she scarpers.
Guppy follows the kid into the living room. Alex has made a beeline for his zone and is sitting in it, brooding. He got a bit big to go under the coffee table, so they have been trying to tempt him to a small portable pop-up tent. He adored it the moment he set eyes on it, which was helpful - not least because they could then get a second tent to use at places like Hannah's house.
"I can't believe she taught him the f word!" Frogspawn groans. "He's going to be shouting it at nursery before we know it."
"It sounds like she had a really hard time of it."
"Yeah, I know, just of all the words she could have taught him. What are we going to do? If Hannah can't handle him overnight, there's no hope for Tanya, and I don't like leaving him with Mum."
"Hm. Max said there's the option of emergency respite care, but that's a last resort. Don't worry, we'll work something out." Guppy sits on the sofa and gives her a hug. "If necessary we'll bring him with us."
