May. 7th, 2010 11:26 pmThey put the kid to bed early in order to talk. Might be a little tense, and they don't want him picking up on the vibes.
"Guppy, you're being a bit... over the top." Frogspawn leads, from her flopped out position on the sofa. "I cannot go through the whole of the rest of this pregnancy without standing, it's impossible!"
"I wasn't saying you shouldn't stand at all, I was just a little shocked that you were bouncing up and down playing Wii tennis with Alex. You realise you can play that game perfectly easily sitting down."
"I only bounced once! I get backache lying down all the time, and you are treating me like I'm made of glass. I want to spend this time playing with Alex while he's got me to himself." She softens slightly and takes his hand. "Just... sweetie I know you're worried, and I know you can't help it, but I need you to calm just a little. I don't need reminding that this is a high risk pregnancy, I'm just trying to keep my blood pressure down."
"Okay... I'm sorry."
"It's okay..." she gives him a hug.
There is a sudden loud thud from upstairs, and Alex screams.
"I'll check him, don't even think about running up these stairs." Guppy says, as he lets her go and starts running up. Frogspawn rolls her eyes and follows him, admittedly more slowly.
Guppy climbs over the padlocked baby gate securing Alex's room. The kid can get through most of the other gates, and it would be dangerous if he tried to go down the stairs. As it is, the little boy is on the floor next to his cot, screaming and crying. Guppy crouches next to him, glancing up at the cot - the padlock stopping him from lowering the sides to escape is still there.
"Fry, it's okay, I'm here. Did you climb out? Where did you hurt yourself?"
The kid doesn't respond, which is understandable, just screams. Guppy gently tries to pick him up to look him over, which is greeted with even louder protest and an attempt to bite his hand. Well, he's able to stand, doesn't look like he broke anything obvious...
"Is he okay?" Frogspawn gets the key for the baby gate, having no intention of climbing over it. "How has he fallen out?"
"He must have climbed. I'm not seeing any obvious injuries." He offers Alex a cuddle, but the boy refuses and toddles into a corner, where he curls up and rocks himself. He gradually stops crying. Guppy has an agonising urge to pick the kid up and hug him, but he knows that won't be accepted. But when Alex stops crying, he approaches again.
"You must not climb out of the cot." he says gently. "It's dangerous. Are you hurt?"
"No." Alex says quietly.
"Back to bed then." Guppy picks him up and puts him back in the cot.
In the morning, as Guppy goes through the usual battle of getting the kid dressed, it's easier to tell where he landed. His shoulder looks a bit bruised and sore, but nothing broken. He's relieved. Alex has already had too many trips to Casualty when he was into head banging, and he really doesn't want another visit from the social worker. He adds a mental note to go shopping for a toddler bed to stop him getting hurt again.
He's brought back to reality by a sharp bite from Alex.
"Ow! No biting, that hurts." he says sternly. "Say sorry."
"Sowwy."
Guppy looks down at the little boy. It's the first time he's done that; even though it was prompted, it sounds like maybe he means it.
"It's okay, it's good that you said sorry." he says quietly.
Maybe there is hope of getting things calm before the baby arrives, he considers, watching Alex very slowly tug his socks on.
