Sep. 4th, 2009 08:29 pmIt was a little late to celebrate their anniversary. About two weeks late, actually, but things were too chaotic at that point.
But tonight Frogspawn's mother unexpectedly offered to babysit. They wrote a sheet of important instructions, including the ones about not grabbing him suddenly from behind and not rushing him for cuddles.
"I don't think we should go out for too long." Frogspawn said as they left the house. "I don't think she read that sheet properly."
"Hey, you, Hannah and Tanya survived past babyhood." Guppy points out. "We'll be back in two hours, he's sitting in front of Pingu, all she has to do is feed him and put him to bed. I'm sure she'll be fine."
They go out and have the best part of a lovely dinner before the phone rings. Guppy steps into the corridor and answers it.
"Guppy... I think the two of you should come back." Mrs Osbourne says to him, in an unusually sheepish tone.
"What's happened?"
"He bit me and now he's hiding."
Guppy sighs.
"Okay, don't panic, he does do that sometimes. Continue looking for him and don't turn on any electrical appliances without looking inside them first. And don't leave the front or back door open, he can't have gone far."
They drive home quickly. Guppy starts looking for Alex in his usual places while Frogspawn interrogates her mother on what exactly happened.
"You didn't read the sheet, did you?"
"I didn't need to, I know how to look after a baby."
"Alex isn't like other babies! What did you do before he bit you?"
"I was just cuddling him, I didn't do anything!"
"What did you do after he bit you."
"I told him off and left him in the living room watching In the Night Garden while I washed my hand. When I came back he was gone."
Guppy finishes his thorough search of the living room and starts on the kitchen.
"Okay, he can't have gone far, he can't climb stairs and the cat flap is locked." He looks at Frogspawn's mother. "I think you better go, in case he's hiding from you."
"Charming!" Mrs Osbourne snaps. "When you find him, there will be Words about you teaching him to fear his grandmother!"
"Hey, if you'd bothered to read that information sheet we gave you, you'd know that Alex cannot cope with being touched without warning, that he is terrified of IgglePiggle from In the Night Garden, that he reacts badly to being shouted at and that he bites and hides in small places." Frogspawn says angrily. "This is no time to argue, this is time to find Alex, so please go and we'll sort this out later."
They search the house thoroughly, putting Pingu on the television in the living room in case it can lure him out. After half an hour, Frogspawn is in tears.
"Go and check he hasn't got into the bar." she says. "I know the portals don't usually come down here but it's worth a try. If he's not there come back quickly and we'll call the police."
Guppy hugs her tightly, his heart pounding.
"Go and look upstairs thoroughly, just in case he's learned to climb stairs. I'll check the bar. If he's got in there, someone will have spotted him, and he couldn't have got out of the main bar."
He lets go and runs up the stairs to go into the bar.
