rev of the car engine somewhere outside.
His phone makes a little bleeping noise. Guppy groans and stiffly pulls himself out of the bath. He doesn't get social text messages, therefore it must be important. He runs a towel quickly over his body and slips on a dressing gown just in case one of his housemates turns up. He picks up the phone and opens the message.
Is this ur cat?
Guppy looks out of the window. Scampi is sleeping, as cats do, in the middle of the driveway. At the end of a driveway is a blue car, revving up its engine.
"Aargh!"
Guppy grabs his pager off the table and dashes downstairs, sliding down the banister until he falls off it, then picking himself up and running to the front door.
"SCAMPI!" he presses the pager button to make it bleep. The cat opens one sleepy eye as the car starts to move at maximum acceleration. The eye widens and he yowls, dashing towards Guppy and the pager that he associates with coming back to his mum. Guppy grabs him and leaps out of the car's way back into the house, slamming the door with his foot as he lands on his side.
The bruises do not cushion his fall well, and for a moment he is completely unable to move with the pain. But as footsteps approach he pulls himself up and locks the door. A few seconds past, then a pair of eyes peep through the letterbox.
"Nice dressing gow-ow-ow!" Lee withdraws as Scampi's tries to scratch his eyes out and gets only his fingers. Guppy jumps forward and holds the letterbox shut, in case Lee has more fireworks.
"You can't prove anything. Drop the charges or we'll make your life hell."
There is the sound of feet crunching the gravel. Guppy gets slowly to his feet, clutching his side, picks up the cat and gets as far away from the front door as possible.
