Room 147:
Guppy has been awake all night, looking after Mitzi as she recovered from the poisoning. Now she is pink again, although with a residual green glow still around her. Now that she is better, she has become irritable again; angry at being ill and with enough strength to make a fuss about it. He is tired and she is snappy. It is not a good combination.
Guppy gently gives her water through the syringe, which she accepts without making a fuss.
“Good girl. I know you can’t eat much at the moment but you need to keep hydrated,” he says, gently stroking her head. She flies over to the desk and squawks next to an uneaten ham sandwich. He looks up.
“Give it a rest, sweetheart. Let’s concentrate on getting you better. You can worry about my eating habits later.”
He goes over and sits down at the desk, making a note of how much water he’s given her so that he can fill Hagrid in on the details later. He doesn’t feel hungry at all, and it’s mid afternoon by now. Mitzi shoves the plate over to him. He ignores it. She bites him hard on his hand, which is already bandaged up from the other day when she decided to skin his knuckles, on an uncovered patch.
“No! I will not give in to biting.”
He carries on with the notes, trying to ignore her. She grabs the sandwich in her beak and shoves it in his face.
“Mitzi, stop it! Cut it out!”
He puts the sandwich back on the plate, picks up the bird and puts her on the floor the other side of the room in the corner he has just made the ‘time out’ corner, removing his fingers from her beak.
“Right, you can stay in this corner until you stop biting.” He says firmly, going back to the desk and putting his head in his hands, wishing that just for once she would understand.
The volatile little bird sees red. She hasn’t enough energy to switch bodies and force him, but it’s time for a demonstration of power. In a rage she summons up her magic, forcing it down in front of her into a glowing, dazzling pink egg of energy. Guppy looks up from his hands and stares at it.
“What is tha…”
The egg explodes with an enormous bang. The force of the explosion throws the man and flamingo backward in opposite directions. Clouds of thick, dark pink dust fill the air, hanging and falling very slowly so that it looks like smoke. Mitzi coughs violently, feeling a lot of pain in her left wing and in a total panic. What on earth had gone wrong there? It wasn’t meant to be that powerful. It was just meant to scare him a bit. Too late, she realises that whenever she did it before, it was outside.
She ploughs through the smoky dust until she finds Guppy, out cold, having struck his head on the wall. She pecks at him, worriedly, nudging at his face to try and wake him. He doesn’t respond, and she is frightened. She pulls his room key out of his pocket, goes to the door, shrinks to bee size, drags the key under and goes off to find help.
