Well, this can't go worse than some previous years, Guppy figures as they sit down in the school hall. Fry's nursery nativity was a disaster after he pushed everyone off the stage to make room at the inn. Last year it was Coral that shouted out 'It's behind you' in the middle.
This year Fry's class were each given the choice of being angels or shepherds, with no gender restrictions. Which is why Fry, and one of his classmates Joseph, have disappeared backstage to don sparkly white dresses. Coral was helped into her little lamb costume before they arrived, and is skipping around looking cute.
The kids in the class above are doing all the main parts. By prior arrangement, because he was having difficulty with abstract 'go there' instructions, Miss Hebblethwaite has marked a little cross on the floor, at the edge of the angels, for Fry to stand each time he comes on stage.
Just before the start, the teachers call Guppy to come backstage.
"What's the matter?" he asks, when Fry comes running up to him.
"I can't wear the wings!" Fry wails, almost in tears. "They're scratchy and hurty!"
"Does he have to wear the wings?" Guppy asks. "I'm sorry, I didn't think to try them on him." They'd already excused him wearing the halo, as he's particularly sensitive to his head being touched.
"No no, how about you carry a harp instead?" the teaching assistant says. "Then you can sing your song with the others?"
This seems to avert disaster, and Guppy heads back to Fran and Brooke.
"Miss Hebblethwaite, I want to go at the front!" one of the girls, Lucy says, just as they're about to start. "Why does Fry get to each time?"
"Because if everyone moves it'll get confusing." Miss Hebblethwaite whispers back.
"He's not going to push that little girl off the stage is he?" Fran whispers urgently to Guppy, seeing something of a power struggle each time they come on stage. After the first few runs, Fry is practically running onto his pot on the stage. One of the older kids, the narrator, has been explaining that some people believe that in the story of Christmas, and various carols have been inserted into the plot.
As the angels come on to sing Away in a Manger, Lucy stands right on Fry's cross. Before the piano can start, Fry taps her on the shoulder and says loudly:
"You're in my spot."
There are some giggles in the audience. Lucy glares at Fry, who gives a large, exaggerated sigh.
"Excuse me, you're in my spot."
The audience, thinking it's part of the show, laugh a little louder. An arm appears at the side of the stage and points the disgruntled Lucy to go and stand in her allocated place. Fry stands precisely on the cross on the floor as she moves.
"Wasn't that adorable?" Teddy's mum says, after they're finished. "I hadn't realised they were casting Fry in a comedy role, it was so cute!"
"I'm pretty sure that was an ad lib, but thanks." Guppy laughs. "Teddy's got a good singing voice, he looked like he was having fun."
He frowns slightly as he sees Joseph's Dad nearby, looking very disgruntled.
"What the flaming hell have you put him in a dress for?" Joseph's dad demands his mum. "We've got enough trouble with him doing girl stuff."
"Well some angels were male, dear..." Joseph's mum says. "And the teachers let the kids choose."
"Joseph, go and take off that dress, those are for girls." Joseph's dad says. He glances over at Guppy, who's watching. "I'm complaining to the head about this, want to come with? I see they've put your lad in a dress as well."
"No thanks, if Fry wants to be dressed as an angel I have no objection." Guppy says.
Coral, still wearing her lamb costume, skips over between them and looks up at Joseph's dad, tugging at his trousers.
"Mummy says boys can do what girls can do and girls can do what boys can do... except do a weewee forwards." And then she folds her arms, and dares anyone to challenge a very small person in a lamb costume.
