Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

"We try. And it's worth it, you know? Having a family, having someone to belong to."

She smiles a little wistfully. There's someone she cares deeply about, but she's not sure it would work completely. Even if he is in love with...the...thought of her?

"I can see how it would be," she says finally. "I'm glad you guys were able to find each other."

"Sometimes things work out, I guess," he says. "I don't know if I believe in karma or anything, but... you know, you go through enough crap in your life and don't you kinda deserve something good for a change? She's probably my reward for everything that's ever happened to me. And probably the only one I'll ever get, so I need to protect what we've got."

It's good to hear things like that.

"It's good that you have a couple blessings in your life. I have my friends, but...that's all I've got here. A...Death Ray blew up, and I kinda...got in the way of the debris."

He frowns.

"Mad scientists, huh? We got a lot of them back home, and they... have a way of making things go wrong. And dangerous."

She blushes a little.

"It wasn't Billy's fault! It was Captain Hammer! Billy--uh, Doctor Horrible--warned Captain Hammer not to use it...and he used it anyway."

"Archrivals?" he asks. "Or not-exactly-friends?"

"Archrivals. I...uh, sorta dated Captain Hammer for a while. I...was dating him when I died, even though...well...if Billy would have asked..."

Obviously, she's got an awkward streak when it comes to him.

"...oh, one of those," he says, nodding, sympathetic. "Well, you've got opportunities now, I guess?"

She shrugs, "I'm not sure a lot of people would want to date a dead girl, if you know what I mean. Not that I'm not corporeal enough, but...the whole getting pulled back into bar after a couple of days, and not being able to go home sort of sucks."

"There's ways though," he says. "Have you met a guy named Teja? He's over by the fire with his cats a lot, or working in the forge. He's been here longer than I have, he's dead, and he's got a relationship with someone who's not. Maybe he's got pointers."

She nods, considering it.

"Maybe, if it's not too awkward, he'd talk to me about it."

"You can tell him that I sent you, for general advice about being dead. Maybe work up to the relationship talk, see how things go. He's... well, from the ancient world, so he doesn't have a modern view on talking about relationships and feelings and stuff, but you never know."

She nods, "Thanks. I really appreciate all the help I can get, you know?"

"He's a good guy. Level-headed, dependable, usually around. Does really nice work, too--he made some beautiful jewelry for Coreen."

She smiles a little more brightly. "That's great! He sounds really interesting. Maybe if I get some money sometime, I'll get something."

She's not normally one to spend money on herself, really.

"You should ask Coreen sometime, I'm sure she'll be happy to show you what she's got that he made for her," he says. "But I like buying her things, when I can. It's never really been an option before."

She nods, "I'm sure she enjoys it too. Presents are always nice."

She likes presents as much as the next person, of course.

He chuckles.

"Yeah, but I'm not really looking forward to the holiday season this year, all the same. I've got no idea what to get her. It's our first nonspecific winter holiday season together, so... it should be something really good. But that's a lot of pressure."

"You could always try to make her something," she offers. "I always really like hand-made presents."

"I'm not really a crafty kind of guy," he says. "I made her a Canadian Hippos set once, but that was really just a paint job. But besides that... she's so much better at making things than I am."

She thinks about that for a few minutes. "Is there something she's been wanting for a while? Or some secret thing she doesn't really tell anyone she likes?"

"Probably," he says. "I don't know what she likes though, besides making things, and those truffles. I know what she doesn't like--usually where it overlaps with things that I do like."

"They do say that opposites attract," she says with a friendly smile. "It's probably good you have your own realm of things. Couples that like all the same things and do every little thing together kinda...weird me out."

She shrugs.

"Well, you said she likes jewelry...that may be a place to start?"

"I've known people like that, and... yeah. That's not how we are, thank Squirrel-god. It'd be like being by yourself all day, but a version of you with a separate body so you could send somebody else to get you a soda from the kitchen."
