Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

"I'm good. You're getting big! When's the baby gonna output?"

"Output?"

But it doesn't take her long to translate what he means.

"Oh! The baby's due in about thirteen weeks. Miss Bar's said my due date is February 26th."

Mia puts a hand on her belly where she feels some kicking.

"He's not too sure what to make of this place. We think he's starting to sense the residual magic of places like my home and Milliways and this is the first time I've been to a place that's largely non-magical since then."

"Wow. Sounds kinda like my niece. You can tell all that from the kicking? Or is that magic, too?"

"There's magic, too, but he's not trying to reach out with it the same way he is with his hands and feet right now. I was surprised to find that Draco and I can sense his magic like this and that he's able to kind of feel around back with it. He'll likely be able to recognize Draco and me both by magic and by voice when he's born."

"That's so cool! Definitely sounds like Mairi."

"What was Mairi like before she was born?"

"She pinged her dad, starting real early, and he was able to talk to her. She tried to talk to the medical scanners, too."

"Really?"

She glances at her belly.

"I don't think he's able to talk in a way that Draco and I can understand. He uses his magic the he'll use his words at first: kind of like babbling, trying to do what he can see we're doing."

"Well, that's what I mean. She pinged them, that's all she could do. But Bob says she has started to talk in keytool for real, a while ago, since she got more practice with that earlier."

"Wow."

She briefly wonders if this has something to do with the trend of Ausas being magical prodigies or if all magic families can sense their baby's magic.

"I guess it's not too much of a stretch when Draco starts calling Cepheus a genius."

"That's his name? Cepheus?"

She nods.

"Draco has a family tradition to name children after stars and constellations. Cepheus sounded like a perfect name when we saw there was a star from Draconis in the constellation."

"Oh. My girlfriend's brother gave me a star projector, but I've never been able to see the pictures. They all look like networks to me."

"It's easier to find them in the sky if you see them traced out in a picture. I've got some astronomy books that trace the pictures out."

"Oh, I've seen them that way. They just don't look like... what they're supposed to look like."
