The customers of Holby's Asda hypermarket find their ears filled with a shrill, ear-piercing scream. Guppy pushes the trolley containing his wailing infant down the ketchup aisle, trying his best to ignore said superscream. This is not a scared scream, it's a frustrated angry baby scream, the sort that becomes habit if said baby gets attention from it.

He briefly manages to quieten Alex by singing the Pingu theme tune. However as soon as he stops to try and find the tomatoes, the wailing begins again.

"Good grief, I don't know how you manage it." Says a smug and amused voice at his elbow. Bethany's mother, complete with Bethany in her trolley, are nearby, watching in amusement as Alex throws a full blown tantrum.

"I'm sorry, it's really easiest to just wait for him to stop." Guppy says apologetically, over the noise. "He's unhappy because they rearranged the products."

"Er, right." Bethany's mum arches an eyebrow. "Well you do have my sympathy." she says in a smooth tone. "It must be so hard to have such a difficult child. Bethy's so cuddly, I couldn't imagine not being able to snuggle her. We're thinking of entering her in the Baby of the Year competition in the Holby Evening Post. I don't know how we'd cope if she behaved like Alex."

"Hey, he's not so bad." Guppy says. "Today he identified the colours blue and yellow."

"Of course. It's so nice for the other babies having him in the other class. Bethany comes home with far fewer bruises."

"Yes, we had him advanced a year, he was too smart for the nursery class." Guppy says, irritably, feeling she's rubbing his face in it. "Come on Alex, let's get this over with."

He ignores the tantrum as much as possible, and the people staring or muttering that he should be given a dummy (neither he or Frogspawn want that - not good for babies' teeth) or a piece of chocolate. Eventually he manages to get the shopping done by singing the Pingu theme tune over and over, instead having people staring at him because he's singing a tune made up basically of the word 'quack'.

The instant they leave the shop, Alex stops his tantrum, and goes to sleep with exhaustion. Guppy rolls his eyes at the fickleness of toddlers and drives them home.

At home, Alex wakes up again in the best of moods, just in time for Pingu on the television, then delights his parents by repeatedly identifying green, yellow and blue bricks.

In the hallway, a note drops through the door, but is eaten by the cat before any of them get a chance to read it.
