Aug. 17th, 2010 10:02 pmAs Guppy gets home from the bar with supplies for the power cut, the phone rings. He's initially surprised, then remembers that it gets its power from the other end.
It's work. Despite having a backup generator to cover for the cut, to an extent, a number of the patients managed to injure themselves when the power went and they can't find Dr Wood because his mobile isn't working.
He gets the kids settled and equipped with food, then makes his way over there. He works for a couple of hours to get the patients sorted out - a few cuts and bruises, a broken wrist and a broken hip - then does a quick search for Dr Wood. Not like the man to disappear in a crisis.
He shines his torch into the dark spaces left between emergency lighting, and peeps into the glass window of his boss' office. He's about to walk away when he turns back and checks again. Just something in the corner of his eye...
It's a foot. On the floor, the rest of the person lying out of sight. Shit.
He tries the door. It's locked. That makes no sense. He calls down the corridor for someone to get help, then bangs hard on the door. The foot doesn't move.
He takes a few steps back, tries to remember what he learned in karate, then charges to kick the door in. The first time this results in him falling on his backside, but the second he manages to pop the lock. He picks his torch back up and goes in, kneeling at the man's side. At least he'll now have an excuse to show someone the probably broken finger he got hitting Vyvyan.
It's Dr Wood. He's got blood on his head, but fortunately appears to be breathing and has a pulse. A nurse comes in with some kit and he works to stabilise the man - neck brace, spinal board. Someone comes up to say that A+E is full of new casualties, so they get the doctor into a side room. Fluids, bloods, ECG... at which point Dr Wood comes around and starts insisting he wants to get up.
"What happened?" he asks Guppy pleadingly, not liking being the wrong place in the room.
"We found you locked in your office unconscious." Guppy says. "You seem to have suffered a head injury..." looking at the ECG. "And we're going to need cardiology to take a look at you. Do you remember what happened?"
"Not really." Dr Wood says. "If I had a cardiac incident maybe I fell..."
Guppy looks at his boss' hands.
"Maybe." he says. "But those look like defensive wounds."
