Taking his son to see Coral has become an important part of Guppy's daily routine. He's more than a little worried about the prospect of getting her home and him freaking out.

Today, he finds Frogspawn's mother in the ward when they get there, apparently giving one of the staff a hard time. When she sees them, she gives up on the doctor she was trying to interrogate, and goes over.

"I want some straight answers." she says to Guppy.

"And hello to you too." Guppy replies. "What do you want to know?"

"Oh no, Granny!" Alex says loudly. Granny glares at him, then looks back at Guppy.

"I want you to tell me if Coral is damaged." Granny says.

"Damaged?" Frogspawn asks, incredulous at her wording.

"Not as far as we can tell." Guppy says, more calmly. "She's got a little jaundice but that's not unusual in new babies, and it should self-resolve in a few days."

"What about brain damage? Like him?" Granny says loudly, as she points at Alex. "Don't give me that look, I've seen what he's really like now, and he's a nightmare. How are you going to cope if Coral has it too?"

Damaged. That's what Daddy said about his fire engine after he threw it down the stairs to see if it would fly.

"Excuse me, he's right there." Guppy says, irritably. "And he's autistic, not brain damaged. If you'd bothered to read any of the information I've given you, you'd know it's most likely genetic. And there are lots of ways that we help him not spend entire nights hiding under the bed. I'm sorry he played you up but he had just seen his mum collapse."

He turns and offers Alex his hand, which the toddler accepts.

"If it's genetic then you should have a vasectomy!" Granny says, following him.

"No thank you." Guppy says.

"Watdat?" Alex asks.

"You're answering that." Guppy says to Granny.

"It's... a vase with a hole in." Granny says.

"That would be a vasotomy." Frogspawn points out traitorously, in an attempt to make her mother squirm. To Alex. "It's an operation some grown up men have on their dangly bits, but don't worry because Daddy doesn't need one."

Alex ponders this for a long moment, during the awkward silence that follows as they enter the room where Coral is sleeping. Then he starts to laugh.

"Dangly bits!" he shouts loudly, startling the other visiting parents.
