Dec. 16th, 2009 11:33 pmThe radio in the car is playing Christmas music over the sound of the heavy rain with occasional flurries of snow. Guppy tries to concentrate on his driving, but in truth both he and Frogspawn are singing along to the radio. Christmas shopping is all done, all they need to do now is pick up Alex from his aunt's house and head for home.
"Turn left here!" Frogspawn yells suddenly, causing Guppy to brake sharply. Fortunately there is nothing behind them, but he winces nevertheless.
"Honey, can you warn me a little sooner when you're going to do that."
"Sorry." she says apologetically. "These country lanes all look the same, I know. This is the one with all the bridges."
Guppy nods, approaching the first bridge. Like many country bridges, it's built over a large dip in the road, which has accumulated a little water. As he drives under it, the water comes up somewhat higher than expected, and there's a massive splash that sends water in through the gap in the window Frogspawn's side, left to stop the windscreen from misting over. She gives a squeal.
"Sorry." he says apologetically. "I know the river burst around here earlier but I didn't realise it was so deep..." He frowns as the car goes through the next waterlogged dip, suddenly judders, stalls and comes to a stop in the middle.
"Come on car..."
After five minutes of trying to get the car started again, and noting the fact that the footwells have a few inches of water in, they climb into the back seat away from the water while Guppy phones for help.
"It's going to be two hours." he says, looking worried. "They already have a load of other people who got stuck in similar situations."
He snuggles close to her. It's freezing cold and the radiator seems to have packed up.
"Can't we call them back?" Frogspawn asks after about half an hour. "My fingers have gone blue."
"Hold on." Guppy says, climbing back into the front. "I'm going to get Alex's blanket out of the boot."
"How? We can't open the door or all the water will get in."
"Through the sun roof."
"That's a stupid idea."
"I don't want you freezing." Guppy says, climbing out of the sun roof and across the roof. He jumps off onto the dry land at the end of the boot, unlocks it, retrieves the baby blankets and climbs back on again.
"Here you go." he says, dropping them through the window to her. "At least it's stopped raining.
As he moves to climb back in, his foot slips and he falls backwards into the two foot deep puddle. He gives a yell, both because it's freezing and because it doesn't fully cushion his fall against the tarmac.
"Okay, so we're an hour from rescue, I'm freezing even with my clothes on, and all you're wearing is two baby blankets. Guppy, you have to call the fire brigade or something before we get hypothermia! Nobody's even been down this road since we got here."
"We can't."
"This is no time for pride!"
"No, really, my phone fell in the giant puddle."
Frogspawn groans.
"I have an idea how to stay warm."
"Then share it!"
"Have you got any condoms?"
"I don't take condoms to the shopping centre routinely, Guppy."
