We really need to get a proper coffee table in here.

Guppy shifts his paperwork over to one side, covering up the draft poster he made for a new Life Support Volunteer. The more urgent issue, working out a way to reinstate his boss, remains on the table in front of him.

"I don't think our cardboard box table can withstand the weight of multiple projects." Frogspawn comments, peering over his shoulder. "That means you have too much work."

She yoinks Dr Wood's reinstatement plan out of his hand and has a look.

"There's only one way to start a campaign, and that's on Facebook. I'll work on this, then you'll have time for the rest."

She kisses him on the forehead and disappears upstairs before he can protest. Guppy smiles fondly, and carries on with the rest whilst watching Alex, who is absorbed in a nature documentary.

"Aw, now what?" He gets up to answer the door, and his mother in law barges in, holding a big box.

"Good evening to you too." he comments, preparing for her to disturb Alex's documentary viewing and cause major angst.

"I came to see Alex. Though I don't know why you let him stay up so late." Grandma says. "No wonder he's so badly behaved."

"He doesn't sleep until eleven either way." Guppy points out. "Might as well let him use his time constructively. And he's not that badly behaved, he just doesn't like being touched."

"Hm." Grandma drops it for the moment. "Anyway, it's embarrassing the way he ignores me at family events, so I've come to make amends with a big present."

"That's kind of you, but I'm sure being nice to him would work better..." Guppy says, as Grandma walks up and turns off the television. Alex looks like he's about to cry.

"Hello Alex." Grandma leans forward to kiss him on the face. Alex's look turns to horror, and for a minute Guppy is convinced he's going to hit Grandma in the face. But instead, Alex puts his hands out and more gently pushes her away.

"No!" he complains.

"Good boy for not hitting." Guppy says quickly, though Grandma looks appalled. He shrugs at her. "I told you not to touch him. Please respect his need for personal space. Believe it or not, that reaction was actually significant personal growth..."

Grandma tuts, and puts the present down in front of Alex. This gets his attention, and she opens the box to reveal a big shiny garage toy. Alex's eyes widen, then he charges towards the box and climbs in, pulling it over his whole body.

Guppy restrains a giggle as the toy lays ignored. After a moment, Alex pokes his fingers out of each of the little holes in the box, in turn.

"Thank you, I think he likes the box, and I'm sure he'll like the toy in due course." He crouches next to the box, then lifts it up.

"Peekaboo! Say thank you."

"Tanyoo."

"Good boy." Guppy says.

"Alex, can you say Granny?" Grandma tries.

"Byebye." Alex climbs back into the box.

After a moment, the box starts wiggling across the floor. Guppy starts to laugh, and doesn't manage to stop until Grandma has stormed off, slamming the door loudly after her.
