Apr. 8th, 2009 10:04 pm"This was left to you, once the money was gone." the man at the door says, handing Guppy an envelope. "I think it's just a letter. But we weren't allowed to deliver anything until after the inquiry."
He waits patiently whilst Guppy opens the last words of Mrs Beech and reads it.
'Dear Dr Sandhu,
I hope that leaving the money to you has not caused too much trouble. I hope that it will make you and your little boy happy. But I understand it may not be allowed, in which case please donate it to a charitable cause.
I trust you to keep the secret of why I could not leave my goods to my son. Quite simply, he will spend it on drugs, and my conscience will not allow me to fund his habit any longer.
Thank you for looking after me in my last few months.
Celia Beech'
Guppy sighs sadly. Well, it would have been a good idea to see this earlier, but it can't be helped. He thanks the man at the door and goes into the house, tucking the letter into his pocket.
"Hey Fry." he says, going back to the baby on the floor, playing under a dangly toy of some sort.
"What's this? It's... a cow!"
Babies have it so easy. He thinks, lying on his back and prodding at the cow for Alexander's amusement.
