Apr. 2nd, 2009 09:50 pmGuppy's boss smiles reassuringly at him and hands him the paper.
"You're in the clear on the first charge; the autopsy has come back as a second stroke."
Guppy nods. "Good. Well, I knew I was innocent but there was always a risk of foul play from someone else."
The consultant nods.
"That means you're no longer suspended, however there will still be an enquiry as to whether you coerced Mrs Beech into leaving you the contents of her will. The police will want to interview other members of staff and the lawyer who supervised the will, but I'm confident that they'll find you innocent. Try and avoid the rest of the Beech contingent. Try not to be caught anywhere alone. We can't bar them from the premesis yet, but if they hurt or threaten you, please contact me and Security."
Guppy manages to go through the rest of the work day without any hassle, but he is just fumbling for his keys when he is approached at his car. Mr Beech puts his hand on the car door.
"Dr Sandhu. We've been told that the death was of natural causes. In that respect, I owe you an apology."
Guppy, a little surprised, nods.
"Apology accepted. You're more than within your rights to look out for your late mother, especially under the circumstances. But I can assure you that I did nothing to encourage either her death or her will choices. I knew nothing about it."
Mr Beech sighs.
"I would like to believe that. But the fact remains that the decision was very out of character, and something, somewhere, went wrong. I hope it wasn't down to you. But I don't know you. Do you know of any other reason why she might decide to disown her family?"
"You really want the truth? Well, she was in hospital for three months, and asked us to call you every day, which we did, and none of you ever visited." Guppy says. "Hospital is a lonely place, Mr Beech. I'm sure you had your own problems, but that could be the reason..."
Guppy finds himself landing on the floor even before he realises he got hit. He immediately blocks in case there's anything else coming... but the man has stopped, clutching his hand and sobbing.
"I'm sorry Guppy. Your father killed himself with a plastic bag."
"No! It's not fair, you should have helped him..."
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I've never done that before." the man says through his sobs. "But I can't believe what you just said. I have to know that my mother at least wasn't in sound mind when she made this decision, and that's why I have to go through with this enquiry. But if you want to press for assault, I'll plead guilty. Did I hurt you? I... I hurt my hand..."
"Just get away from me!" Guppy yells loudly, getting into his car and locking the door.
He sits there for a while; the man has gone, but he can't quite trust himself to drive yet. After a few minutes he pulls the mirror down and looks to see if he's getting a bruise.
He keys in Frogspawn's number on his speed dial, then hesitates. The guy could still be around, the last thing he wants is her and Alex to come and pick him up. No, get calmed down, then drive.
