The room is dark. As it should be, because it's night, and the time when sensible people should be sleeping.

Guppy has learned not to rush in, even if Alexander is actually crying. His default reaction after having woken up in his usually restless sleep is to get up and check the baby is all right, whether or not he was actually in the dreams. The pangs of anxiety each time have lessened slightly when he's been reassured that baby is absolutely fine, as though somehow reinforcing that dreams are just dreams.

As he did last night, he checks the batteries in the respiratory moniter. A clever little box, no tubes or wires, but just a watching guardian angel that moniters movement and sounds off an alarm if Alexander really did stop breathing or something. Frogspawn bought it a few weeks ago. Guppy suspects that it was more for him than because she was worried about Alex. After all, there's no reason why he should stop breathing.

The corner of his eyes spot a pair of big blue eyes looking back at him, and he feels a pang of guilt. Did coming in wake him? But Alexander isn't crying; judging by the smell, he just decided he wanted to relieve himself.

"Bet you did that on purpose so you could get a cuddle." Guppy says softly, lifting the little boy out of the basket in the cot to take him to the changing table.

He pauses now and again through the procedure to do the mandatory silly things like blowing raspberries on the baby's tummy. He doesn't get giggles yet but Alexander seems to like it when he puts his face really close.

"Bet you're wondering how you managed to get me in here before you woke up." he says, finishing and picking him up for that cuddle. "It's because your Daddy is a silly man who worries too much. But I'm working on it, I promise."

He wakes up the next morning in the armchair next to the cot, with his hand poking through and one of his fingers being held by the sleeping baby, who is almost smiling. When he gets downstairs, he finds Frogspawn loading a picture of the scene onto Facebook.
