Apr. 29th, 2008 10:16 pmGuppy stares into the fridge, and pulls out two bottles. One milk. One apple juice. The former is empty.
This is a four litre, and it's got empty since this morning. Since when did Frogs and I start drinking this much milk?
The apple juice, he doesn't even remember buying, and he knows she doesn't like it. Did her sister request it maybe?
He frowns slightly, puts the bottles down, and looks at his nails. They're sort of sharp, and pointy...
There's something weird going on around here
He wanders outside and goes back to the scorch mark on his lawn. He feels around, and picks up some small fragments of metal...
I think Frogspawn was right. I think something did land here. Of all the bloody luck.
He looks for prints, and finds a small pawprint in the mud. About the size of the kitten he saw. The kitten that was in a cardboard box when he found it.
A startled and very loud scream from Frogspawn makes him dash back into the house. He runs upstairs and finds her standing by the bathroom mirror, staring at the long furry tail sticking out of her pyjamas.
"...what is that?"
She looks around, and points to his pyjamas.
He looks down and behind. Black furry tail. He staaaaaares.
A moment of shocked silence between them, then Frogspawn goes into the bedroom, throws some proper clothes on and comes back.
"I knew it! We did summon aliens. It was that funny cat!"
"But what do we do now?"
"Come on Guppy, you're the one that's used to this sort of thing!"
Guppy blinks. He's been careful. Really careful. How can she... Frogspawn steps forward at his look of alarm.
"It's okay. You were good. But Holly warned me about a month ago. I understand why you couldn't tell me yet. Now come on portal-man, what would you do if you were in your other place?"
Guppy looks at her, then at the tails, and begins to laugh.
"Find the alien."
"Then let's do it, before we're late for work. If necessary, we can bandage the tails onto something, but let's try and find out if we're going to get ears."
Guppy feels like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders. All this time he's been dreading telling her about his other life, but he needn't have. She knows. She doesn't mind. That helps a lot. He puts on some proper clothes, tucking the tail in, then joins her going down the stairs.
"We're looking for a creature that looks like a cat, right? What's the obvious thing to find a cat?"
"A dog?"
"Yep. Sparky! Come here girl." He picks up the little dog and carries her over to the cage the little 'cat' was in. "Find the kitty."
It doesn't take long before, in the depths of Guppy's garden, he has a startled cat-like creature in a net. Not the one he had before, a strange, slightly larger bald-looking one, wearing a waistcoat and holding a screwdriver. Frogspawn looks at it in fascination, taking a few photographs. Guppy goes for the next part of his plan.
"If you're intelligent enough to get here, you probably have some sort of translator. So listen up. You turn us back, or we turn you in and you get probed."
The cat thing reaches into a pocket of its waistcoat, with something approaching a sigh, and passes Guppy a card through the net.
The civilisation of summonnable geek aliens apologising for the behaviour of Captain your people say Trojen cat who make you distractable by string and steal your food. Please thankyou to be drinking apple juice and all symptoms and tail go soon please do not probe staff or expose us. We peaceful nosy things.
Guppy looks down at the creature.
"Frogspawn, there's some apple juice in the fridge. Can you get that please?"
He keeps the cat thing in the net until they've both consumed a glass. Once Guppy is satisfied that the tails are indeed shrinking, he releases the net.
"I guess weird stuff happens here too." he says, smiling as he watches the tails shrivel up and go away. "And you can certainly handle weird."
Frogspawn smirks, taking a last picture of her tail for prosperity before it disappears.
"Of course. I'm dating you."
