I thought nothing in the world, short of imminent death, would bring you back.

Guppy sits in the study of his home, the only place that Nathan doesn't tend to look for him. It's also the only room in the house with a reasonable amount of furniture in, apart from the kitchen. Books are stacked up against three walls, two desks line the remaining one. One of the desks is covered with paperwork, the other one is kept clear except for work in progress. In this case, there are just a few items on it.

One is the wedding invitation for his mother and uncle's Anand Karaj; to be a fairly informal occasion given his mother's need not to over-exert herself. The second, an ultrasound picture of the reason why she shouldn't over-exert herself.

The third is a birthday card. He thinks, anyway. And two packages, one large, one small. The large one he knows is from Nana, because she forgot to put any stamps on it. He has an idea who the card and the small one are from, but can't open them until at least midnight tomorrow.

A half knock on the study door makes him look around and smile at Nathan. He gets a small smile in return.

"We're all packed." Nathan comes in, holding Angel against his chest. The little baby smiles at Guppy. "I just came to say thanks."

"Any time." Guppy smiles and moves over to tickle Angel. "You weren't much trouble."

"Except you had to feed us, bring us all that baby stuff, I'll never forget your kindness Guppy. You're the only friend I've had in the last few years." He hands Guppy a card. "That's from both of us."

Guppy looks at the card, with Happy Birthday written neatly on the front, and a tiny baby handprint underneath. And grins at the cuteness accordingly.

"Thank you." He kisses Angel's head gently. "And if you two get into trouble again, come back, okay?"

Nathan nods.

"Guppy?"

"Yes?"

"Um... this is Holby. Bad things happen. Like they did to Selena." Nathan fidgets slightly. "I know if anything happened to me that my mother would probably take care of Angel, but... would you be her godfather?"

"I'd be honoured." Guppy draws them both into a gentle hug. "Now stop worrying, let's get your stuff sorted."

As the taxi draws away, Guppy wanders back into the house, past the dog sleeping on the cat sleeping on the beanbag - Mental note, find camera before they wake up - And goes back up to the birthday card.

Unable to bear the suspense any more, he opens it.

'To Gurpreet,

You are not being replaced.

Happy Birthday,

Love Mum.'

He picks up the new ultrasound picture that fell out of the card and holds it up to the light.
