"Cubicle one?"
"Fresher, drunk, fell in a manhole. Waiting for orthos."
"Cubicle two?"
"Fresher, drunk, glued self to fence post. Currently has his hand in a bowl of water trying to loosen it."

Guppy raises an eyebrow and looks at his FHO.

"Emily, how many of our cubicles are currently occupied by freshers?"
"All of them." She rubs her forehead tiredly. Guppy frowns at her, recognising the symptoms.
"When did you last sleep?"
"I got eight hours last night, it's not that. I think I might have flu."
Guppy puts his hand to her forehead.
"You haven't got a temperature. Symptoms?"
"Headache, nausea, tiredness, bit dizzy..."
"Go home." Guppy takes the patient notes off her and the relieved junior doctor doesn't wait for a second opinion. "It's probably not anything but if you are going down with something we don't want you passing it on."

He goes to see the fresher in four (broken wrist) before heading for a pit stop into the staff room.

"Bloody urn's broken." Holly says to him as he comes in, prodding her cup of cold tea.

Scrap that then.

He goes to see the fresher in six (food poisoning - dodgy pizza). Then wanders back to the staff room in search of an orange squash. And then there's Holly sitting on the sofa looking just as bad as Emily did.

"Hey, you ok?" He asks, slipping an arm around her. "You look rough."

"Head's killing." She looks up at him. "Feel like I'm going down with flu or something."

Guppy frowns for a moment.

"Emily has the same symptoms, I told her to go home."
"Yes, she came and asked me."
"You were fine earlier, when did this start?"
"About half an hour ago."
"Holly, both you and Emily have the...woah there." he reaches out and catches her gently. He picks her up and carries her out, hitting the fire alarm as he goes.

"EVERYONE REMAIN CALM AND ASSEMBLE IN THE CAR PARK PLEASE." Glancing at the receptionist who is watching him in amazement. "I'm ninety percent certain the tea urn in the staff room is giving out carbon monoxide, bring the number for City, we're going to need to transfer patients." Pointing to one of the porters. "If you're still feeling all right, grab as many oxygen masks and cannisters as you can from the store, we're going to need them. The rest of you please evacuate everyone from cubicles then come and see me in the car park."

He carries Holly out amongst the dashing patients and gently lays her in the recovery position on the grass. The receptionist passes him the megaphone and he stands up.

"Okay, everyone listen carefully and do not panic. We have reason to believe that you've been exposed to carbon monoxide. Anyone with a non-urgent complaint, I advise you go home. Anyone with more symptoms than you came in with and a moderate or worse problem stand there, you will be assessed and transferred according to priority. Anyone already unconscious needs to be brought over here."

He takes one of the oxygen tanks off a porter and carefully puts it over Holly, wanting more than anything to stay with her until she's okay. But he can't, already there is a small pile of others that need seeing and a crowd of others that don't need urgent treatment but are just panicking.

"Guppy, someone in Resus has arrested, we can't move them."

Guppy winces, grabs an oxygen tank and heads back in. It's going to be a long night.
