Dec. 11th, 2006 10:08 pmWas it worth persisting? Worth coming back every day in his few hours of free time. Worth making himself climb up a tree to get a good vantage point.
The first three cards, she threw away. But this time she opens it. And looks at it for a moment.
Guppy holds his breath as his uncle appears in the doorway. He curses under his breath. The man lives a long way after all, it's only natural that he'd stay over a few nights.
"Is he still bothering you?"
His mother looks up and nods.
"Right, he's probably watching again. Let's finish this."

Guppy tries to keep still, fighting fear and vertigo. But as he watches, his mother slips the card into her pocket as soon as his uncle is out of sight, before putting the envelope in the bin.
A small smile creeps onto his face at this sign of hope. And then rapidly disappears as the tree shakes violently.
"I warned you! Get out of it!"
Guppy wobbles, and falls, grabbing out at a branch.
"You know, I really don't care." he yells, dropping to the ground. "Because she is my mum, and she will always be my mum, just as long as we are both alive and whatever you, or anyone else says."
He ducks as his uncle throws a punch, grabs the hand and swings it carefully into a lock.
"STOP IT!" he yells. "STOP IT! I'M FED UP WITH THIS. I AM YOUR NEPHEW, IN YOUR FAMILY, AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO ME THAT CAN NEVER CHANGE."
"Gurpreet, put your uncle down this minute!"
Guppy lets go at once, and gets smacked in the face for his trouble. His mother steps between the two at once.
"Stop it! Both of you! I will not have you fighting on my doorstep."
She turns to Guppy's uncle. "Leave now please." She notices Guppy's look of hope. "And I'm not ready to talk to you either, but I won't have violence crushing my azaleas."
