Oct. 14th, 2005 11:18 pm"If you are not with me, then you are against me."
Jas hands Guppy the gun.
"We finish this here and now. Ten paces, turn and fire. Honour is satisfied."
He begins to walk away.
"Father, no!"
"I will fire at the end of the paces."
Guppy turns and walks away, trying desperately to remember the get out clauses in films. When they turn around, he fires his shot into the air. His father smirks, raises the gun and
Bang.
As Guppy's shot ricochets of a lamppost, Jas falls in slow motion, the bullet ripping through his head. At the same time, his bullet shoots towards Guppy, getting closer and closer until it touches his sternum.
Guppy's eyes jerk open and he gasps.
Brain tissue splattering in front of him. So much dark blood.
He leans over and frantically unties his right hand from the bed before rushing into the bathroom and throwing up.
When he has finished, he feels a gentle hand rubbing his back. Abs hands him a glass of water.
"All right mate?"
Guppy nods and sits back against the bath, sipping the water.
"Sorry, you weren't asleep were you?"
Abs shakes his head. "Nah, I just got in about two minutes ago. Another nightmare?"
Guppy nods, but can't bring himself to describe it.
"This happen to you?" he asks quietly. Abs nods.
"Yeah, 'cept I was in a detention centre. They don't take too kindly to people who cry out in their sleep. I was proper messed up by the time I got out of there."
Abs shakes his head sadly and stares at the floor. After a few moments of silence Guppy looks up at him.
"You okay?"
"In relative terms, yeah. Just got a lot to think about with Tess, and finding out... something, it ain't important and I don't need to talk about it."
Guppy puts one hand gently on his shoulder. Abs smiles a little and switches back into conversation he can be in control of.
"How's the hand?"
Guppy holds out his left hand. The marks are healing nicely.
"I was doing it in my sleep so I tied my right hand to the bed. Took a little getting used to, but it seems to be working."
He sips the water, starting to feel better. Abs watches him, thinking for a moment.
"Fancy a game of football?"
Guppy gives him a puzzled look.
"You want to play football. With just the two of us. In a garden three by four metres at ten o'clock at night with no lighting?"
Abs smiles. It had been Aeryn's idea.
"Yeah."
Guppy pauses for a second, then smiles.
"Yeah, okay."
