Jun. 24th, 2005 05:08 pmIt's sunny in Holby. Being near to Wales, that's pretty rare. That's why Guppy's happy to wait outside the hospital for his father to come out.
After these first few attempts, he is totally immersed in thought. Enough to stop him from feeling silly standing outside doing nothing. Earlier he was wondering if he should take up smoking just not to look so strange sitting there.
His attempts to make things up with his father have so far been as successful as trying to put a live ostrich's head through a cheese grater. Jas won't even talk to him, and until he does, they can't get any further. He wonders whether he is trying to go to fast, but then again, he hasn't gone anywhere at all.
He almost misses Jas when he finally emerges, walking past without even noticing his son.
"Hello Father."
Jas turns around, scowling with irritation.
"What do you want?"
"We need to talk."
"I told you, I don't want to talk to you. Nobody wants to talk to you. Why can't you just leave me alone?"
He starts to walk away until Guppy follows and stands in front.
"Get out of my way."
"I don't understand. What went wrong here? Why can't we be on good terms?"
"Why would I want to be on 'good terms' with you? A pathetic, snivelling boy who is no credit to me whatsoever. If it's money that you want then you can forget it. If you don't want that, then just get out of my sight."
"Why?"
"Because I am ashamed to have a son like you. Now get out of my way."
Jas is bigger than Guppy. He pushes his son forcefully away, almost knocking him over.
"Father, please! What do I have to do to sort this out? Think of the curse."
It slipped out without him meaning to say it. Jas looks back around, scowling.
"The curse, yes. Thank goodness for that. Doctor in Holby with a family feud? That must make you a prime target. Pity it doesn't exist. If you believe in it, then you're even stupider than I thought."
Jas walks away. This time Guppy lets him go. There's only so much of his father's abuse he can take in one day. For a split second he wonders if his father really would rather that he was dead, and decides not. In the end he slips away home, deep in thought.
