Guppy got up at the crack of dawn this morning, hoping to gain some ground on Mitzi. With Lucca's scanner in his hand, he heads to the forest and follows it to try and find her. Taking it at Scout's pace (20 paces walking, 20 paces running; a very quick way to get around without getting too tired), he can see that he is catching her up.
It is nearly lunchtime when he reaches the spot where she was at last night. The ground below is soft and damp, and he immediately notices something odd. Lying on the soft mud are around twenty or so dead tadpoles. He shudders, knowing what this means. Her magic is starting to run low if she could not send them back to wherever she got the pond from. By the wetness of the ground, she struggled with the water.
He follows her tracks in the soft mud until the ground becomes dry again. A little further on there is the sign of a scuffle. A third pink feather, this one with a few drops of blood, lies on the ground. He looks back at the scanner, knowing that she cannot have gone that far. She hasn't; the scanner detects her less than half an hour's distance away.
Guppy follows the signal, still hurrying at Scout's pace. Soon he sees a flash of pink light, and knows he's getting close. Now he breaks into a run, calling out to her. She squawks in reply. When he reaches her he sees her trying to fight off two demonic bunnies. The flashes of energy, similar to the explosion that knocked him senseless, are having little effect. She is weak. He grabs the matches out of his pocket and tries to light them. Each goes out after only a second. As one of the rabbits sinks its teeth into her wing, he realises that he has to do something now.
Grabbing a large stick, he runs at the rabbits shouting and stamping his foot. The rabbits stare at him as if to say 'Yeah, right. Like that's going to scare us.' He smacks the rabbit holding Mitzi over the head with the stick, forcing it to let her go. The second rabbit jumps and sinks its teeth into his arm.
Insert lots of swearing here.
As the first rabbit gets up and heads for his leg, he kills two birds with one stone by moving the leg to kick the first rabbit. He tries to persuade himself that it's not cruel, and that the rabbits would actually kill both of them if they could. Grabbing Mitzi, he runs for it. Enough ass-kicking for one day.
He runs as fast as he can, the bunnies hot on his heels. They are faster than him, but he keeps running, kicking them every time they try to bite his heels. He's glad he marked trees. It's giving him something to follow back home. Back home to the bar. Home to Milliways. The adrenaline keeps him going, diverting all his energy to his muscles to just keep going. As he gets back to the place where Mitzi made a pond last night, he slips on the wet mud and crashes into a holly bush. As the rabbits approach, he grabs the matches out of his pocket again and gets a big handful of dead holly leaves. Placing them on the wet mud so that the fire will not spread, he lights the leaves and they flare up immediately. The bunnies stop and stare at them in horror, before fleeing into the depths of the forest again.Without proper fuel, the fire burns out on the wet ground.
Guppy breathes. A lot. He lies in the mud for a minute or so just getting enough oxygen to move, then sits up as Mitzi gently nuzzles his cheek with her beak to make sure he's okay.
"I'm fine. Are you okay?"
She shakes her head and he gently entends the broken wing. She winces. He gets the simple first aid kit out of his bag and looks to see what he's got. Getting a small, straight stick for a splint, he bandages the wing against the splint so that she doesn't move it too much, and to try and stop the bleeding. When she sees the wound she faints, not being comfortable with the sight of her own blood. He gently holds her with her head down until she comes around, then continues to bandage the wing. She nods in the direction of his own arm, out of which blood is pouring from the rabbit bite. He looks down at it and frowns, watching the blood soaking into his trousers. Those jeans will never be the same again. There are no more bandages in the first aid kit, so he tears a strip off his shirt with his Swiss army knife, tying it around to slow down the blood loss.
When he gets up he is caked in mud and incredibly stiff. But as it is past midday, and it took him five hours at Scout's pace to get this far, he knows there is no time to waste. He picks up Mitzi and heads back, still at Scout's pace, stopping only a few times to eat lunch and drink water.
