Oct. 1st, 2008 05:47 pm"Honey, I don't care how amusing the nicknaming would be, we're not calling our baby 'Tad'." Guppy says, rolling his eyes at the phone as he steps out of the hospital. "No, really, we can't go yelling 'Tadpole' across the playground. If you want to continue the naming theme we're going to have to go with something more subtle... Haddock? That's a joke, right? I'll be home in ten, put the kettle on."
He puts the phone down, tucks his trousers into his socks, and gets on the bike. He's noticed a lot of people are taking up cycling. People suddenly aware that this isn't such a good place to walk home from. He's never been more grateful to have a car; even if like today, the arrangement doesn't work as easily for different shifts, it at least means Frogspawn can get home every day.
He reflects, as he puts on the helmet, how a month or so of married life has changed the way he operates. How he feels not just a desperate urge, but a responsibility to stay alive and safe... and well.
He brakes sharply as he turns the corner to find a large St Bernard dog sitting in the road ahead of him.
"Shoo!" he says, waving a hand. "Silly dog."
The dog moves around and gently grasps Guppy's trousers in its teeth. Guppy whimpers slightly and tries to pull away, but realises that the dog isn't actually trying to pull his leg off. He gets off the bike, as best he can.
"Off!" he says, as the dog patiently pulls him into a nearby garden. Reaching into his pocket, he chucks the dog a biscuit and breathes a sigh of relief when it lets go and bounces after it. At which point he sees the elderly man lying below a toppled stepladder.
"I stand corrected." he says, moving over to the man as he reaches for his phone, "Clever dog."
