Jun. 10th, 2008 09:22 pmThe setup for this party is more or less the same as the previous, except minus the alcohol and thanks to Kate there is now a little more furniture.
Frogspawn's older sister spends most of the evening avoiding their parents and instead talking to Guppy's grandparents. Frogspawn's mother, ex cat burglar turned nun, spends most of the evening arguing with Guppy's, and both of them interrogate Frogspawn and Guppy about their intentions. Guppy's uncle spends the entire evening looking awkward and Frogspawn's father, ex cat burglar turned monk* wanders between them all apparently having a whale of a time. There is hinting of a younger sister in Frogspawn's family, but whoever she is none of them are talking about her.
Towards the end of the evening, Guppy's mother pulls him to one side.
"You got us all together for a reason. You are thinking of marrying this woman, aren't you?"
Guppy smiles in a neutral manner.
"No offence mum, but you don't have a say in who I marry."
"Her family are criminals!"
Guppy tilts his head, remembering his father's illegal drug tests, various cases of child abandonment and window smashing, assaults...
"Your point being?"
"I will not come to the wedding." She turns away, grabs her husband by the arm and storms off. He gives an apologetic wince over his shoulder.
You assume you're invited. Guppy shrugs and goes back into the house, where Frogspawn has finished seeing out the other guests. He flops on the sofa next to her.
"Well, that could have been worse. Sorry my mother insulted the food."
"That's all right. I thought mine was going to punch yours for a bit, but they settled. Your Nana is lovely."
"Thank you. I like your sister a lot. Shame she couldn't bring Abby."
They sit and chat, letting their respective families go back to the backs of their minds.
