Aug. 6th, 2007 08:24 pm"Hi there Guppy, great to have you on the team."
A pretty brunette woman greets him with a smile, extending a hand.
"Dr Holly Miles. I'm your consultant. I had your job before the post became vacant so it's a bit of reorganisation for all of us."
Guppy smiles and shakes the offered hand.
"Have I seen you somewhere before?" he asks, trying to place her face.
"You're from Holby City? I used to work there, I'm probably still on the old staff photographs. I've travelled in between, but I came back a couple of years ago."
She takes him on the guided tour, including such important sites as the source of coffee, the on call room and the staff room. Guppy attempts to memorise the layout, but he knows it'll take time.
"Oh, and this is Emily." Holly adds as they complete the tour. "FHO year 1, started five days ago. We had just a locum and myself in before her, so you can see why we were desperate for staff. Thank you for coming at such short notice."
"That's okay." Guppy says, smiling at and shaking hands with Emily, who already looks tired and harrassed. "My position didn't really exist any more at City anyway."
Holly nods, noting the past tense.
"I'm sorry about Dr Donovan." A small sad smile. "I met her a couple of times when she used to work as a police surgeon, and I was always impressed. She will be missed."
She hands him his new ID badge.
"And as for the question I wanted to ask when I first started and I'm sure you do; yes, St James' does have a lower rate of staff assaults. But we maintain it by watching our own backs and the people around us. Learn where the security buttons are, stay alert and I'm sure you'll be fine. Anything else you need to know?"
Guppy shakes his head.
"No, thanks. I'll... get cracking then."
"Great. Give me a shout if you get stuck, I know SHO to registrar can seem a bit daunting. And we're gathering in the Boney Arms after shift, you'd be more than welcome."
And with that, following the patient on a trolley who just arrived, she disappears.
Guppy stands there for a second, trying to remember where cubicles is, when a timid hand touches his arm.
"Dr Sandhu?" Emily asks nervously. "I have a dislocated shoulder in four."
He smiles and follows.
