Guppy's 30th Birthday Party

Having collected everyone from the bar, Guppy leads them back through to the house, where they enter through the kitchen.

The living room furniture has been mostly moved out of the way, and that's where the most of the party has been set up. The sofa and some chairs are around the edge of the room, and there's music playing. The kitchen is a bit small so the food is being taken through into the dining room. Also a little on the small side, but enough for purpose. All of the baby gates are open on the ground floor, but not on the stairs.

Upstairs, the spare bedroom has been set aside for any little people at the party. It's a bit quieter, with baby-sized food, some toys, and a DVD of Pingu playing.

Well, here's an interesting pair.

"Hey," Penny says with an awkward smile. "I'm Penny."

"Joe," Squirrel says, offering a hand. "And this is my Coreen. Actually I think I'm hers. Nice to meet you."

Coreen finishes grabbing a small plate full of snacks, and is mid-bite when she's introduced.

She wipes her hand on her dress and offers it to her.

"He's mine as much as I'm his," she smiles warmly.

Penny first takes Squirrel's hand, then Coreen's.

"It's nice to meet you guys. Uh, Milliways?"

"Yeah... that obvious, huh?" he asks with a chuckle, and a brief flick of his tail. "Guppy delivered our son Ev. He's a great guy."

She smiles, "I volunteer in Life Support now. Still fairly new to Milliways, but...it's home now."

She takes a quick bite of cake.

"I bet your boy's real cute."

"He's adorable, though I'm biased," he says. "If you ever see a round little baby in the bar, with squirrel ears and a tail, that's him. Cutest little thing."

He is, too.

"How are you liking it in Milliways so far?"

She smiles. "I'll have to keep an eye would for a round little baby with squirrel ears and a tail."

She thinks about it for a minute..

"I've got mixed feelings, to be completely honest. Found out some not so great news."

His grin fades a bit.

"...if it's the usual sort of not-so-great news people find out when they come to the bar, I'm sorry. Whatever it is, I hope things work out."

"It's seeming to be the common news of Milliways," she shrugs and has a bite of cake.

"Just means I get to meet tons of new people that I would never have had a chance to meet."

"There's always a bright side," he agrees, and helps himself to a piece of cake too. "Lot of good people there."

"Did you guys meet in Milliways?" she asks. "Because that's really cool if you did."

"We did," he says, the grin returning. "One of those... not exactly love at first sight, but definitely fascination at first sight, and love pretty soon after that, kinda things. There's nobody back home like Coreen, and I think it's fair to say that there's nobody in her world quite like me either."

That's quite understandable.

She herself has never believed quite in love at first sight...but fascination is a good word,

"How long have you guys been together?"

He has to think about it.

Well, time works differently.

"A little less than eight months, I think. Hardly been any time at all, but I can tell it's gonna last. We're getting married soon."

Why yes, he is proud of her.

...and they have a kid?

Stranger things, she supposes.

She smiles at him. "That's fantastic! Congratulations!"

"Thanks," he says with a grin. "It's a little stressful, you know--so many big changes, all at once--but it's worth it, overall."

"Overall?" she asks. "What, if you don't mind me asking, would you change, given the chance?"

These sorts of things have always interested her.

"Oh, nothing about her, or about us," he says. "It's more that... I don't have the best job right now. I'm in politics, and that's no kind of life for a family. We can't live in her world, we can't live like a normal family in mine. All we can do is try to make the best of it, until I can get a better job."

She nods, "That sounds like a really tough situation...But making the best of it; staying positive is all you can really do."

"We try. And it's worth it, you know? Having a family, having someone to belong to."

She smiles a little wistfully. There's someone she cares deeply about, but she's not sure it would work completely. Even if he is in love with...the...thought of her?

"I can see how it would be," she says finally. "I'm glad you guys were able to find each other."

"Sometimes things work out, I guess," he says. "I don't know if I believe in karma or anything, but... you know, you go through enough crap in your life and don't you kinda deserve something good for a change? She's probably my reward for everything that's ever happened to me. And probably the only one I'll ever get, so I need to protect what we've got."

It's good to hear things like that.

"It's good that you have a couple blessings in your life. I have my friends, but...that's all I've got here. A...Death Ray blew up, and I kinda...got in the way of the debris."

He frowns.

"Mad scientists, huh? We got a lot of them back home, and they... have a way of making things go wrong. And dangerous."
